Burundi’s avocado sector has strong potential, but its future is being threatened by the export of immature avocados. We urge farmers and exporters to resist the temptation of short-term profits by harvesting fruits before they reach proper maturity. With the current Dry Matter (DM) level at only 19% maximum, many exported avocados fail to ripen well, disappointing consumers and damaging Burundi’s reputation as a reliable origin. Exporting immature fruit may bring immediate income, but it ultimately weakens buyer confidence, reduces repeat orders, and undermines the long-term sustainability of the entire sector. Protecting the future of Burundi’s avocado industry requires strict respect for maturity standards and a collective commitment to quality over quick gains.
